Wilman Lovegrass

Willman Lovegrass (Eragrostis superba) is a warm season, short-lived, perennial bunchgrass that grows between 2 and 4 feet that is excellent for grazing. It bears little resemblance to other lovegrass varieties. Wilman lovegrass is adapted to most soil types but does particularly well on deep, well drained soils from sands to clay-loams. Wilman lovegrass was imported from Africa and while it does not tolerate the cold as well as native grasses, it is drought tolerant. In Texas it is well adapted to areas where annual rainfall is 16" or more. It is often incorporated into native grass mixes because it is both relatively easy to establish and will establish earlier than native grasses. The planting rate for Wilman lovegrass is between 2 and 4 pounds PLS per acre. The seeds are roughly the size of a grain of sand and should be planted around ¼" below the ground surface using a small seed drill-box. The seedbed needs to be firm, smooth and clean and should be packed prior to planting and again following planting. The best time to plant is early spring and fertilizer should be applied on the basis of a current soil analysis to ensure establishment and production. Both cattle and deer find Wilman lovegrass highly palatable and readily consume the green forage and cured hay. The dense undergrowth produced by Wilman lovegrass also provides a reasonable habitat for quail and other wildlife species. Grazing can be started in the early spring and rotational grazing practices should be employed to maintain a viable stand. Do not graze Wilman lovegrass any closer than 6" or, if hayed no closer than 4". The first cut of hay should occur on, or about the 1st of June and it's not uncommon to get two to three cuttings per year. Moderate rates of fertilizer can be applied. [table “” not found /]
