Lavender is one of the most popular herbs and is grown for both its pleasantly scented leaves and its colorful flowers. Plants are tender with small gray leaves and lavender-colored flower spikes. Use to perfume soaps, pillows, sachets, bath water, and in flower arrangements. Plant as a low hedge or edging. For stronger plants either start seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost, or sow outdoors in late summer/early fall and provide winter protection where temperatures drop into the teens. Water Lavender regularly and fertilize when plants are 6" tall. Prune immediately after flowering to keep plants compact. Cut stems as flowers open. To dry, hang upside down in a dry, dark, well-ventilated area.
