Alkali Sacaton (Sporobolu airoides)

alkali-sacaton.jpgAlkali Sacatone (Sporobolu airoides) is a tough perennial grass that grows in large bunches that are 2 to 3½ feet tall.  Alkali sacaton ranges from South Dakota to Washington, south to Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and Mexico. The culms of Alkali Sacaton are erect to spreading and range in height from 20” to 40”. Its blades are generally less than ⅛” wide and are flat, elongate and become involute.

Big Bluestem (Andropogon geradii) is a tall native, perennial, warm season grass and is climatically adapted throughout the Midwest and Northeast.  Big Bluestem is a tufted grass that forms sod, and has short, scaly rhizomes.  Big bluestem is tall, reaching a height of 6 to 8 feet on most areas where it is protected from grazing.  It is very leafy at the base, with some leaves carried up on the stem.  The seed heads normally have 3 spikelets that look like a ‘turkey foot.’

Blue Flax (Linum lewisii) is light blue , cup shaped flowers smother this durable perennial. Flowering peaks during early and mid-summer, with scattered blooms through early fall. Plants grow 18″ to 30″ (46-76 cm.) tall in a spreading, arching shape with a delicate, airy effect from the lacy gray foliage. Blend with wildflowers, in grassy areas, on dry slopes or other areas of poor soil.

Blue grama (Bouteloua gracili) can be found throughout the Great Plains and is a major warm season grass. Blue grama is a short plant  (10-20″) with 3-6″ narrow basal leaves. It grows in well defined bunches and reproduces by seed and tillering.

Blue grama is often found in association with   buffalo grass, western wheat grass, needle grasses and in some places the bluegrasses. The curved seed heads resemble a human eyebrow.

Broom Sedge Bluestem (Andropogon virginicus) is a native, warm-season, herbaceous, perennial bunch grass that is popular in ornamental landscaping. In areas where growth is abundant cattle happily graze on the young plants during the spring and early summer soon after growth starts. From a nutritional perspective it is low except during these early growth stages. However, its nutritional value increases considerably by prescribed burning. When mature broom sedge bluestem is unpalatable. Several species of birds and mammals feed on the seed during winter when other food sources are not available.

Eastern Gamagrass (Tripsacum dactyloides) is a warm season, native, perennial, sod forming grass and is a relative to corn. Native to the Eastern half of the United States, it does best in moderately well drained to poorly drained soils.

Lowlands, sub-irrigated, or irrigated sites that are not alkaline will also support this species well. Extended periods of flooding are also tolerated.

Eastern gamagrass is primarily used for hay and haylage. Compared to other native perennial warm season grasses it is more palatable, nutritious and productive.
